Yakchey La




Yakchey La is a picturesque village in North Sikkim District of Sikkim. It is located 7 km north of Lachung, on the borders of the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. It lies at an altitude of about 10,300 ft and the Yumthang Valley is located nearby.

The literal meaning of ‘yakchey’ means ‘place of yaks’, referring to the animal that is commonly sighted here. The tourists visiting the sanctuary usually look for accommodation in this village. Basic accommodation in comfortable log huts is available for the tourists. The main attraction of this region is the vast colonies of Rhododendron Niveum (smoky blue flowers), which is the state tree of Sikkim. These trees can be found only in this part of the state.
