Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Nestled in the Lachung Valley of North Sikkim District, the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary lies midway on the road between Lachung and Yumthang. The sanctuary is about 137 km from Gangtok.

It is bounded on its southern border by the Yakchey La, on the northern border by the Yumthang Valley, on the east by the Chuba-Sagochen mountain ranges and on the west by part of Chomzomei Tso extending up to Lava pass. The Yumthang Chhu (river) flows through the sanctuary.

Shingba is renowned for its unique abundance of rhododendron trees and shrubs. The rare and endemic rhododendron nevium, the state tree, is found in this sanctuary. Fauna here consists of the serow, goral, blood pheasant, common hill partridge and the highly endangered spotted linsang or tiger-civet.

The best seasons to visit are March – May and October - December.
