Lady Irwin College




Lady Irwin College, started in 1932, is a pioneer institution situated on Sikandra Road, in New Delhi, Delhi. Established under the patronage of the then Vicerine Lady Dorothy Irwin, the college is renowned as the first Home Science college of the country.

Lady Irwin College was one of the first institutions of higher education in India created to serve female students. The first governing body of the college included eminent personalities such as Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.

Lady Irwin College, spread over 16.5 acres of land, is housed in red brick buildings surrounded by expansive lawns. Affiliated to the University of Delhi, the college offers undergraduate, graduate and degrees in a number of specialties in Home Science (Home Economics).

The college has four departments - Food and Nutrition, Community Resource Management and Extension, Child Development and Textiles and Clothing. The college has a handicraft-training centre for artisans.

Indira Gandhi International Airport is about 20 km south of New Delhi. The main bus station is north of the Delhi Railway Station. New Delhi Railway Station is the nearest railway station.
