Gopeshwar is a picturesque township situated amid beautiful mountain ranges, terrace farms and small lakes in Uttaranchal. According to legend, Gopeshwar is where Lord Shiva had reduced Kamadeva into ashes.

Perched at an altitude of 1308 m, the district headquarters of Chamoli District is fast becoming a major attraction for the tourists owing to its natural beauty and fresh and serene atmosphere. Main attractions in the town include an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vaitarni Kund, a group of temples without idols and Oak View. Garhwali, Hindi and English are the major languages spoken in the region.

Gopeshwar is 10 km north-west of Chamoli.
