A spectacular mountain range in South India, Nilgiri borders Kerala in the west, Mysore in the north and Coimbatore in the east. Because of its blue mountains, it owns the name 'Nilgiri,' meaning 'blue mountain.' Doddabetta, the highest peak in Nilgiri, is 2,623 m high. The other peaks range from 2,280 m to 2,290 m in height.

Nilgiri is a land of lush vegetation teeming with wildlife. The hills are also a source of streams and rivers. Udhagamandalam (Ooty), Kotagiri and Coonoor are hill stations on the Nilgiri. Ooty, the headquarters of Nilgiris district, is known as the 'queen of hill stations.'

Nilgiri is an ideal place for trekking. Botanical Garden, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta, Dolphin's Nose, Pykara, The Mukkurthi Peak and National Park, Kodanad Viewpoint and Laws Falls are major places to visit. Tea and tourism festival, summer festival and the fruit and flower show are famous festivals.

Visitors can reach Nilgiri from Ooty. Ooty can be reached by air through Coimbatore (105 km). Ooty is at a distance of 47 km from Mettupalayam Railway Station which is directly connected to Coimbatore and Chennai.
