Coimbatore

Known as Kovai Locally.



Situated on the foothills of the Nilgri hills, Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, is a textile city. The textile revolution of Coimbatore started in 1888 when the first mill was set up. Coimbatore is one of the major industrial cities of south India and is the headquarters of Coimbatore District. Nestled along the banks of the Noyyal River, the city covers an area of 105.5 sq km.

Perur temple, Maruthamalai temple and Forest College are the major attractions. The nearby places of interest are Topslip, Siruvani waterfalls and dam, Annamalai wildlife sanctuary, Black Thunder (water theme park) at Mettupalayam and the hill station of Ooty. Coimbatore is also a gateway to explore Kerala.

Coimbatore is home to some of the famous educational institutions of South India and the Bharathiar University and the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University are located here.

Coimbatore Airport has flights to Bangalore, Kochi, Chennai and Kozhikode. Coimbatore Junction Railway Station is a major railway station of the Southern Railway and is 2 km from the central bus stand.
