Ooty




The most sought after tourist destination in south, Ooty like most other hill stations in the country was a summer retreat of the British. It is located in the green hills of Nilgiris at an altitude of 2,268 m and is also known as Udhagamandalam or Ootacamund. The scenic beauty of Ooty along with the shroud of mist has inspired many film makers.

Prime attractions are Ootacamund Club, Raj Bhavan, St Stephen's Church, Kandal Cross Shrine, Botanical Garden, and Ooty Lake. The nearby attractions are Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary, hill stations of Kotagiri and Coonoor, Kalhatti falls, Simís Park, Avalanche, and Mukurthi peak.

The annual flower and dog shows are held during the month of May at the Botanical Garden. Toda jewellery and shawls, Nilgiri honey and variety of teas can be purchased in Ooty.

The nearest airport is 105 km away, in Coimbatore. Ooty is linked by rail to Mettupalayam and the ride is eye-catching. The major railway station nearby is at Coimbatore. Ooty is well connected by road to Mysore, Coimbatore and Bangalore.
