Yairipok

Yairipok is situated in the interiors of Thoubal District. This village is 26 km to the south-east of Imphal. The place was originally inhabited by Meitei Brahmins but is now occupied by Manipur Muslims.

A megalithic monument is the main attraction of this place. It is believed to have been erected during the period between 1579 and 1652. This monolith is engraved with a full figure of Kurma, the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This monolith is believed to be the representation of the presiding God of Elephants. Legend is that wild elephants came here to pay obeisance to the deity on certain occasions.
