Shey




Shey is a historic village situated in Leh District of Jammu and Kashmir. It was the former capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Ladakh during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Historical evidences also point out to the fact that it was the capital as early as the eleventh century.

Shey boasts of some historic buildings. Notable among them is the Dorje Chenmo temple, a monastery, a palace and a fort. In addition there are a large number of ancient ‘chortens,’ which are tombs containing the relics of revered Buddhist teachers and monks. Buddhism is the dominant religion in this village. A special event celebrated in this village is the religious festival of Shey Shrupla.

Shey is at an easily accessible route from Leh.
