Phillaur is located on the north bank of the Sutlej River, in the
Jalandhar District of
Punjab. It is a class II municipality of the district. Phillaur is 45 km south-east of
Jalandhar and 14 km north of
Ludhiana.
Phillaur derives its name after a Sanghera Jat named Phul, who called it after himself as ‘Phulnagar’. Over the years, the town had been under the rule of Jats,
Rajputs and Sikhs before the British gained control in 1846.
Places of tourist interest include the
Phillaur Fort and the Finger Print Bureau, the biggest and oldest of its type in the country. The ancient sites of Nagar Village (9 km to the north-west) and Katpalon (7 km) are worth a visit. The annual Sarvodaya Mela held, on the right bank of the River Sutlej, on the 12th February to commemorate the immersion ceremony of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes is a major draw.
Nearest airport is at Ludhiana.
Phillaur Junction Railway Station is a prominent rail junction on the Mughal Sarai-
Saharanpur-
Amritsar main line (14 km from Ludhiana and 43 km from Jalandhar) and the Ludhiana-Nakodar-Lohian Khas branch line (33 km from Nakodar). Phillaur is situated on the National Highway 1 and has regular buses to Nawan Shehar (45 km), Nakodar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar.
