Padmashree K M Cherian




Dr K M Cherian is a cardiac surgeon who began his medical career in 1975 and performed the first successful heart transplant in India in the same year. He conducted the first paediatric heart transplant, first heart and lung transplant in India. Dr Cherian is the first and only Indian member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. At present Dr.Cherian is the Director of the Institute of Cardio-Vascular diseases, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai. He held numerous positions like the visiting Professor at the University of Oregon, Senior Registrar of Greenlane Hospital, Royal Alexandria Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital. He is the recipient of several honours including the Padmashree in 1991.
