Indian Institute of Spices Research




Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), a constituent body of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), is a recognized center for post graduate studies by Bharathiar University in botany and Nagarjuna University in biotechnology, and by University of Calicut and Kerala Agricultural University in all subjects.

IISR serves as an institute of excellence for conducting and coordinating research on all aspects of spices improvement, production, protection and post harvest technology. Besides, assistance is provided in developing high yielding and high quality spice varieties and sustainable production and protection systems using traditional, nontraditional and novel biotechnological approaches.

IISR is situated at Marikunnu village, just off the National Highway 212, in Kozhikode District. The Cardamom Research Centre (at Appangala) and the IISR Experimental Farm (at Peruvannamuzhi) are affiliated to this institute.
