Hayagriva-Madhava Temple

Hayagriva-Madhava Temple, situated on Manikuta hill at Hajo, is one of the most popular Vaishnava pilgrimages in Assam. The main idol of this temple is Lord Hayagriva, believed to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Followers of Buddhism regard the idol as that of Lord Buddha or Bodhisatva. Buddhist devotees believe that the temple contains the holy relics of Lord Buddha. Though the temple was renovated in 1583 by King Raghudeva Narayana, its sculptures and architectural features suggest that its original construction could have had occurred in the eighth century. Fakuwa Dol, at the temple precincts, a pond at the foothills and Poa Mecca are other spots worth visiting. The temple can be reached by road from Guwahati, which is 32 km from Hajo.
