Uttarkashi




Uttarkashi, the seat of administration of Uttarkashi District, is a beautiful town situated on the banks of Bhagirathi River, in Uttaranchal. It is a famous pilgrim center in the district, usually juxtaposed along with the holy destinations of Varanasi or Kashi in divinity. Uttarkashi is located 148 km to the south of Rishikesh.

Uttarkashi has many trekking trails and hence is a favorite haunt for adventure enthusiasts. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, situated 5 km from the city center, provides advanced training in the concepts of mountaineering. Other places of tourist interest include Maneri, the temple of Lord Vishwanath and the shrines of Ekadash Rudra, Bhairav and Gyaneshwar. The Magh Mela, celebrated every year on the banks of Bhagirathi, is a major draw, attended by thousands of pilgrims from far and near.

Nearest airport is at Dehradun, which is also the closest railhead. By road, Uttarkashi is linked with Gangotri and Rishikesh.
