Tanakpur is a little known town located on the banks of Sarada River, in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttaranchal
. It was established around 1880 by the British on the site of the earlier town of Brahmadeo. Except for the river, the town holds no particular tourist interest; the place is better known as the railhead to Pithoragarh
From the town, excursions to Shukhidhung, Purnagiri, Shyamlatal, Champawat and Pithoragarh will be an enchanting experience.
Tanakpur Railway Station is a terminus of the line coming from Pilibhit. Buses are less frequent in this route; hence hiring a private vehicle would be a better bet.
