Tonk




Tonk, the administrative headquarters of Tonk District in Rajasthan, is a small town 96 km south of Jaipur. It is on the way to Ranthambore along the National Highway 12.

The history of Tonk dates back to AD 1643. It was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Tonk and was a stronghold of the Pathan tribesmen of Afghanistan who had settled in India. Modern Tonk was founded by Nawab Aamir Khan in AD 1818, as per an agreement with the British. It became a part of Rajasthan in 1948.

Places of interest include Suneri Kothi, the nearby town of Toda Rai Singh, and the Arabic and Persian Research Institute.

Nearest airport is at Jaipur. Nearest major railhead is at Sawai Madhopur.
