Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

A renowned vocalist



Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is a legendary in Indian classical musician - renowned for his unique style both nationally and internationally. He was born on 14 February, 1922 in Gadag in Karnataka and was passionate about music since his childhood days. Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, well-known Sarod player and father of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, was his first guru. Later, he trained under Sawai Gandharva, who taught him the basics of Khayal singing. His style of singing was entirely different from others. ‘Piya milan ki aas', 'Jo bhaje hari ko sada', 'Mile sur mera tumhara' are some of his famous renditions. He has created some new ragas such as Kalashri and Lalitabhatiyar. Government of India has honored him with Padmashree for his contribution in the field of music. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Mysore Sangeet Natak Academy Award are some of the other awards he has received. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi lives in Pune.
