Maheshwar




Maheshwar is a historic temple town situated on the banks of Narmada, 91 km south-west of Indore, in Madhya Pradesh. Steeped in history; its old name was Mahishmati when the city was the capital of King Kartivarjun. Mentions of this place had been found in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Places of tourist interest include the Peshawar Ghat, Fanase Ghat and Ahilya Ghat along the Narmada. Kaleshwar, Rajarajeswara, Vithaleshwara and Ahileshwar temples and the ancient fort complex that houses a museum form the other interests.

Nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holeker Airport, which has direct connections to Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal and Gwalior. Maheshwar is linked with Barwaha (39 km), Khandwa, Dhar and Dhamnod by regular bus services. Omkareshwar Road Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
