Situated 194 km west of Bangalore, Hassan is the headquarters of Hassan District. It was founded in the 11th century by Channa Krishnappa Naik. The presiding deity of the town is Hasanamba (the smiling Goddess). The city covers an area of 9 sq km and the languages spoken are Kannada, Hindi and English.

The prime attraction in Hassan is the temple of Hasanamba. The temple is opened only during the second Ashwayuja (October) for about a week. A ‘jatra’ (fair) is held on this occasion.

Hassan is popular for 'ragi balls,' a local flavor. It is eaten with mutton curry or vegetable stew.

Hassan is a transit point on route to Belur, Halebid and Sravanbelagola.

The nearest airport is at Bangalore. Hassan Railway Station is on the Birur-Mysore line. National Highway 48 passes through Hassan.
