Indian Pangolin




Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) has a series of strong overlapping, brownish-gray scales, a form of modified hair cover the upperpart and sides of the body and has a long tail. Coarse bristle-like hair covers the underpart of the animal. Head-body length is 600-750 mm, and tail is 450-500 mm.

Claws on forefeet are stronger than that on hind feet. Pangolin eats ants and termites, and has no teeth. Its tongue is glutinous attracting ants. When attacked, the animal rolls itself into a tight ball showing great muscular power and is almost impregnable.

The animal can be spotted in the Nameri National Park, Guindy National Park, Singalila National Park and numerous other sanctuaries.
