Common Kestrel




Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a medium sized, long-winged and long-tailed bird found in open country such as fields, heaths and marshland. It is a pigeon sized bird with brick red on top with a gray head and a rounded gray tail. The bird is 34 to 38 cm in size with a wingspan of 70 to 80 cm. The female is slightly larger than the male.

The bird nests on buildings or reuse the old nests of Corvids. It searches for its prey by hovering in mid air, flapping its wings and then swoops down and carry its prey away in its talons. Diet consists of mice, lizards, locusts and other insects.

Common Kestrel can be spotted in the Thippagondanahalli Reservoir, Karnataka.
