Gompa (pronounced dgon-pa) is a Tibetan word meaning ‘hermitage’. Often used synonymously with ‘monastery’, it indicates a place where the Buddhist Lamas lead a secluded life, away from the allure of materialistic world. Gompas usually house a Buddhist temple.
