Lamayuru Monastery is an ancient Buddhist gompa
, situated in Lamayuru
, about 125 km west of Leh
, in Jammu and Kashmir
. It is the oldest and splendidly set 10th century monastery in Ladakh
. It has an impressive location, situated on an eroded crag, overlooking massive mountains and a drained lake.
Lamayuru Monastery has been destroyed and restored several times over the centuries but renowned for its exquisite collections of carpets, Thangkas, statues and frescoes. Lamayuru has numerous man-made caves carved out of the mountainside.
During the 28th and 29th days of the 2nd Tibetan month Yundrung Kabgyad Festival is celebrated.
