Anantnag, the headquarters of Anantnag District, is known as the 'land of springs'. These sulphurous springs is believed to have curative powers and are considered sacred. It was earlier named as Islamabad by Islam Khan - a Governor of
Mughal Dynasty.
The city, with its rich culture and charm, houses many mosques, shrines and temples. Well known for beautiful carpets, the city is one of India’s major carpet producing centers.
Mattan (Bawan) Temple, 8 km from Anantnag, is known for its sacred springs. At a distance of 10 km, are the ruins of Martand temple. It depicts the exemplary architectural work of the Mughal Dynasty. Achabal is another point of interest, 8 km away, where the springs that flows out of the Sosanwar Hill is an eye-catching sight. Bunbagh – the garden in the city is also worth visiting.
The historic town of Anantnag is 65 km south of Srinagar – the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir. The nearest airport is at Srinagar.
