Pangi Valley

Pangi Valley, situated in the upper part of Chamba, is perhaps the most attractive valley of Himachal Pradesh. Often referred to as trekker’s paradise, it is a remote area sandwiched between the Pir Panjal and the Himalayan Zanskar ranges. Killar is the headquarters of this area and it has a helipad.

Pangi is famous for its natural beauty, and its altitude ranges from 18,000 ft to 21,000 ft. The lower ranges of the valley are grassy slopes with dense forests of pine and cedar. Majestic mountains enhance the beauty. Dharwas, the biggest village of the valley, is famous for natural spring of mineral water named Tilmili. Hazelnuts are grown here in abundance. Another attraction is Sural, which is a beautiful sub-valley of Pangi.

Pangi can be visited during late summers through several passes, which form a perfect base for trekking especially for veteran trekkers. Chanderbhaga gorges through the valley. The specialties include rare and endangered species of animals such as snow leopard, ermine, weasel and marmot. Sidh ka Dera, Cherry bungalow and a Devi temple are among the points of interest.

Pangwal, who observes unique customs and traditions, are the main inhabitants of the area. Zanskar hills lies in the northern part of the valley and the Bhot tribes are the main inhabitants here. These tribes are a mixture of Aryan and Mangolian race, and they follow Buddhism.

Pangi can be reached from different routes, and easily accessible are those through Sach Pass (14,478 ft) or Cheni Pass (14,382 ft). These routes are recommended for those approaching from Churah and Chamba side. Another route is via Lahaul, which is opened through a road, and jeeps ply to Killar during summer. Daily luxury buses go from Delhi to Manali, from where one can hire vehicles to cross the Rohtang Pass and drive by way of Udaipur to Sach Khas and on to Saichu village. Saichu has a lovely Forest Rest House and good camping facilities.

During winter, the valley is locked from all the sides, and aerial route is the only way to reach here. Helicopter service is available in stipulated time interval.
