Mahunag Temple




Mahunag Temple is about 25 km away from Karsog in Mandi District, Himachal Pradesh. Lying at an elevation of 1,830 m above sea level on the Shimla-Mandi highway, the temple offers enchanting views of the Karsog Valley on one side and the northern Himalayas on the other. It is an ancient Pahari style temple and is dedicated to Lord Karna, locally known as ‘Mahunag’. According to the legend, whenever devotees are in distress and they seek Lord Karna’s help, he transforms himself into a ‘mahu’ (bee) and rushes to their aid. People believe that Lord Karna’s blessings would help them to resolve legal matters and family disputes. Offerings to the deity are in silver. District records say that the temple was built in 1664 by Raja Shyam Sen, who was a great devotee of Lord Karna. Sundays are special for visiting the temple. An annual fair is held here on Sanskranti day. Nearby tourist destinations include Mamaleshwar Temple, Kamaksha Devi Temple, Churag, Tattapani, Shikari Devi Temple and Sundernagar. Accommodation is available at temple premises and in PWD Guest House and Forest Rest House. Mahunag Temple can be approached by road from Chindi (18 km.) Kullu Manali Airport at Bhuntar is the nearest airport. Nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar Railway Station .
