Tawang




Tawang, the headquarters of Tawang District, is situated 12,000 ft above the sea level on the top of a hill in Arunachal Pradesh. This place is noted as a Mahayana Buddhist center and a land of the Monpa tribes.

The town of Tawang itself is modern, with a bustling bazaar and fluttering prayer flags. People in the village are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.

The most important attraction of this town is the 400 year old gompa called Tawang Monastery. Local attractions include Gorsam Stupa, Tatsang Gompa and the Sangeshar Lake.

The ideal time to visit this place is between April and October. Tezpur Airport and Rangapara North Railway Station in Assam are the nearest airport and railway station.
