Sureswari Temple

Sureswari Temple is regarded as the oldest Shakti shrine in Sonpur, Orissa. It is situated on the left bank of Tel River towards the south-west of the confluence of Mahanadi River and Tel. The temple enshrines Goddess Sureswari as the presiding deity.

It is believed that the temple was built by Lord Parashuram, on request of his mother, to make him free from the sin of killing the Kshatriyas. There is an ancient and big altar in the temple which is believed to be that of Lord Parashuram.

The present temple was built by the Chauhan king, Achal Singh Deo. Balangir Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
