Sonpur




The headquarters of Sonpur District, Sonpur is located at the confluence of rivers Mahanadi and Tel. It was known as Paschima Lanka in scriptures. The city has a cluster of temples, each having its own story. Suvarnameru Temple is the prominent attraction. The Nrusimhanath temple and the door-less temple of Gnyanadei Maluni are worth visiting.

The archaeological excavations conducted at Asurgarh near Sonpur give evidence of human settlement dating to 3rd century BC.

Sonpur is situated on state highway 14 leading to Bhubaneswar from Balangir. Cycle rickshaws, jeeps and taxies are available near the bus stand. The nearest railway station is at Balangir and nearest airport is Biju Patnaik Airport at Bhubaneswar (270 km.)
