Kangra District is located in the valleys of the
lower Himalayas, in
Himachal Pradesh and has many picturesque tourist spots. Sheltered by the verdant
Dhauladhar ranges, the district covers an area of 5,739 sq km and lies at an altitude of 1,597 m above sea level.
Dharamsala, a major
Hindu pilgrim center, is the headquarters which is also a hill station wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow capped mountains. The history of this beautiful land,
Kangra, can be dated back to the Vedic times, 3500 years ago.
Kangra has a rich legacy of ancient arts, crafts and architecture. Miniature and Rajput schools of painting flourished here in ancient times. The exquisite shawls and tapestries made here are internationally renowned. Jhamakada is a major dance form of Kangra. Kangra District is rich in rare flora and fauna.
The population of Kangra District comprises a multi religious community of Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians and Jains. Bajreshwari Devi Temple and the rock cut temples of Masrur are quite famous. Other places of interest are Maharana Pratap Sagar Sanctuary, Sujanpur-Tira and Kangra town.
