The two deities Aswins are the twin sons of
Lord Surya and brothers of Ushas. In
Rig Vedic hymns, they are mentioned as the lords of a hundred powers traveling in a chariot drawn by birds. Forerunners of the dawn, they are said to be the earliest bringers of light in the morning sky and they descend to the earth thrice a day carrying divine medicines. They were worshipped enthusiastically in the Vedic times as they had a power of retaining youth in men.
The Aswins are represented as half-horse, half-men. Their form is attributed to the fact that they were conceived by the Sun's wife
Sanjna, when she was in the form of a mare and the Sun in the form of a horse.
The Aswins are the parents of Nakula and Sahadeva in Mahabharata. They are the physicians of the gods.
