Mahoba District




Mahoba District in Uttar Pradesh is situated at the foot of a granite hill, called Gorakhgiri or Gokhar. This region is associated with the Chandella Rajputs who reined 'Jejjak-bhukti' (Modern Bundelkhand) from 9th to 14th century and is said to have got its name from Mahotsav Nagar (the city of great festivals). The population is about .7 million scattered over an area of 3068 sq km.

Mahoba is very famous for its granite and fine betel leaf (paan). Wheat, gram, peas and oil-seeds are the main agricultural produce. It has a dry hot climate.

Ram-Kund and Seeta-Rasoi cave, Khakraha math, Sun temple, Alha and Udal Chowk, Charkhari, Urmil Sagar dam, and Belatal are some of the important tourist destinations and pilgrim centers.
