An ancient town, Ramanathapuram is located 110 km south-east of Madurai. The place is named after Lord Ram and is the headquarters of Ramanathapuram District.

The Ramalingavilasam palace renowned for its paintings, tomb of Thayumana Swamigal and a museum are the prime attractions. The coastal town of Rameshwaram is 57 km south-east.

Nearest airport is at Madurai. Ramanathapuram Railway Station is on the Manamadurai-Rameshwaram line. National Highway 49 has its route through Ramanathapuram.
