Karnala Bird Sanctuary is nestled at Karnala near
Panvel in Raigad District. This sanctuary is situated at the bottom of the Karnala fort.
Established in 1968, Karnala Bird Sanctuary covers an area of 4.5 sq km. The sanctuary has 150 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds who visit the sanctuary during winters. Rare birds like ashy minimet and spotted heart woodpeckers have been spotted here. In the monsoon season, a bird lover can watch paradise flycatcher, shama or magpie-robin and the malabar whistling thrush, which are the most melodious avian songsters. A variety other birds such as racket-tailed drongo, red vented bulbul, horn bill, myna, owl and ashy rain war blur are also founded. Best period to visit the sanctuary is from October to February.
