Hoshangabad District is located in the central
Narmada Valley on the northern fringe of the Satpura Plateau. It derives its name from the headquarters
Hoshangabad which was founded by Sultan Hushang Shah Gori, the second king of
Mandu (Malwa) in the early 15th century. Hoshangabad has an area of 6,698 sq km and a population of about 1 million. The average rainfall is 1,344 mm.
Places of tourist attraction are Dhupgarh Peak, Chauragarh, Mahadev Temple, Handi Khoh, Jambu Dwip, Satpura National Park and
Bori Wildlife Sanctuary. A very big lake at
Pachmarhi, which is one of the main tourist spots is open for boating for all tourists.
Hoshangabad is of religious importance due to the holy river Narmada. Thousands of pilgrims visit this place for sacred bath on Makar sankranti, Mahashivratri and all Amavasyas.
