Hoshangabad is one of the largest cities in the state of Madhya Pradesh, which lies on the southern bank of the river Narmada. The city also serves as the administrative headquarters of the district Hoshangabad. It was named after the Sultan Hoshang Shah who ruled Mandu in the early 15th century.
The city is considered a sacred place on the southern valley of Vindhya Hills. Satpura Range is one of the major tourist spots which rises from the eastern Gujarat state near the Arabian Sea coast and passes through Hoshangabad. Some of the other major attractions of the state include Panchmari, Bheem Baithika, Bhoj Pur Temple and Ramji Baba Samadhi. At about 3 km south of Hoshangabad stand the ancient rock shelters with primitive paintings of 500 BC.
Hoshangabad is just 75 km away from the capital city, Bhopal, which holds the nearest airport. It is well connected by NH 69 and
Hoshangabad Railway Station situated there helps in its accessibility.
