Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur town, which literally means ‘younger daughter's town’, is the administrative headquarters of Chikmagalur District. It is situated in a fertile valley, nestled between lush coffee growing hills, 251 km from Bangalore.

It is said that the city was given as dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna. The other part of the town, gifted to his elder daughter, is known as the Hiremaglur.

Chikmagalur is a prominent center for trade, commerce and education in the state. Major attractions include Mullain Giri - the highest peak in Karnataka (6,317 ft above MSL), the famous Kondadarama Temple, Jamia Mosque and the St Joseph's Cathedral, noted for its shell shaped portico. Nearby excursions are the 17th century Lakshmi Kantha temple and the 13th century Siddeshwara temple at Devanur (35 km) and the cave of Nirvanaswam at Thiruvanahalli (44 km).

Chikmagalur is well connected by road with major cities in the district. Regular trains are available to Bangalore, Mangalore and Hassan. Nearest airport is at Mangalore (170 km).
