Bokaro District




Located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, Bokaro District has a geographical area of 2,861 sq km. Bokaro lies at an altitude of 210 m from sea level. The rivers Damodar, Ganges, Mayurakshi, Barakar, Koel, Sankh, Kharkai and Swarnarekha run through Bokaro District.

Santhali, Mundari, Kuruk, Khortha, Nagpuri, Sadri, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali are the languages spoken. Paddy is the main crop. In addition, wheat, sugarcane and oilseeds are also cultivated. Major festivals are Sarhul, Sohrai, Badna, Makar, Holi and Dussehra. Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) is the largest steel producer of flat products in India. The important tourist destinations are Garga Dam, Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park, Chandrapura, Babudih, Bansa, Thinjhipahari and Topchanchi.
