Subarnarekha means 'golden line' and the river flows through the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. A multi-purpose project has been designed on this river to benefit the farmers of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal.

Bhavnatha Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated on the river, which also has some holy step wells for the pilgrims to have a dip to get moksha (salvation). The Subarnarekha River falls to a depth of 320 ft forming Hundru falls, which is 45 km from Ranchi. It also has a hill station in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region, Jharkhand. One of the earliest European settlements on the Orissan coast is at the mouth of the Subarnarekha River.
