Pakaur District




Pakaur District lies in the north-east corner of Jharkhand. It is bounded by Sahibganj District in the north, Dumka District in the south, Godda District in the west and in the east by Murshidabad District of West Bengal. Santhali, Hindi and Bengali are the main languages. The climate is charecterised by a hot dry summer, a good rainy season and cool winter.

Pakaur is famous for its beedi making industry. It is the land of Paharias and Santhals. Even though cultivation is the main occupation of the inhabitants, the Paharia people depend on the forest products such as bamboo, sabai grass, silk cocoon and kendu leaves for their livelihood. Apart from wheat, gram, mustard and vegetables, commercial crops such as jute, sugarcane, onion and potato are also grown. Bansloi, Torai and Brahmini are the main rivers that flow through Pakur District. Kanhu Park, Birkitti, Devinagar, Kanchangarah, Nityakali Mandir, Shiv Sheetla Mandir and Dharni Pahar are the important places to visit.
