Chatra District is in the north-west part of
Jharkhand with the town of
Chatra as the headquarters. It is bounded by
Gaya District (Bihar State) in the north,
Hazaribagh District in the east and
Palamu District in the west.
Chatra has a glorious past with an outstanding historical heritage. It is well known for
shakti cult. Generally spoken dialects are Magahi, Nagpuri and Khortha. For official communication either
Hindi or
Urdu is used. Paddy is the main crop. Bajra, maize and pulses are also grown. Folk music is popular in the rural areas of Chatra.
Important festivals are
Holi, Diwali,
Dussehra and
Ramnavami, Vasanth Panchami and Chath. The important place for the tourists include Kolhua hill, Kunda Fort,
Kauleshwari Devi temple, temple of
Bhadrakali, graveyard of Jatrahibagh, Bichkiliya waterfalls and
Khaya Banaroo.
