Udhampur District is situated in the south-eastern part of
Jammu and Kashmir. It is bounded by the districts of
Rajouri in the west,
Anantnag in the north,
Doda in the north-east,
Kathua in the south-east and
Jammu in the south-west.
Udhampur city, named after Raja Udham Singh, is the headquarters. The district is spread over an area of 4,550 sq km, and accommodates a population of about 0.7 million.
Hindi,
Urdu,
Kashmiri, and
Dogri are the major languages spoken.
Temperature varies considerably in the various parts of Udhampur District, as the latitude ranges from 600 m to 3,000 m above the sea level. The Chenab, Ans, Tawi and Ujh are the main rivers. The district is rich in minerals such as coal, bauxite, gyps and lime-stone.
Agriculture is the main means of livelihood. The chief food crops are maize and rice in kharif, and wheat in the rabi season. Apple, apricot, citrus, mango, grapes,
guava, papaya, loquat, and walnut are the main fruits grown.
The most famous among the historical places and monuments are the
Babore Temples, Krimchi Temples, Sheesh Mahal of
Ramnagar, Ramnagar Fort, shrines of Chountra Devi and Pingla Devi, and Reasi Fort. Tourist spots include
Patnitop, Sanasar, and Latti.
