Vadnagar

Vadnagar is an ancient town of great historical importance located in the Mehsana District of north Gujarat. This beautiful settlement is dotted with numerous ancient temples, narrow lanes, crumbling small houses, plinths and pillars and antique architectural elements. Vadnagar is about 34 km north-east of Mehsana and is 112 km from Ahmedabad.

Vadnagar has its first reference in Skanda Purana. It was a center of the Naggar Brahmin community of Gujarat. The town still keeps its old-world charm. Six 12th century gates, extensively garnished with exquisite carvings welcome one into the town. Amarthol Gate is the oldest existing part of the town.

Major tourist attraction here is the Kirti Mandir, with its magnificent 12th century Torana gateways. The 17th century Hatkeswar Mahadev Temple is another major pilgrimage center for the ardent devotees of Lord Shiva. Other tourist attractions include the Kashivishveshvara Shiva Temple, Swaminarayan Temple, Sitla Mata Temple and two Jain temples.

Nearest airport is at Ahmedabad (112 km). Mehsana Junction Railway Station, served by the Western Railways, is a major railhead of Gujarat. By road, Vadnagar is linked with Modhera, Patan, Siddhpur and Unjha.
