Bodo Tribal Costume

The Bodo tribal people of Assam are renowned for their weaving skills. They dress similarly to the people of the rural areas.

A Bodo woman dresses herself in the mekhela, chaddar, and riha. The mekhela is a long flowing skirt, which covers the body from the waist to the ankles. The designs on it are simpler compared to those worn by the women of rural areas. The chaddar and the riha are shawl-like clothes, which cover the upper body.

The costumes of a Bodo man comprises of a dhoti (loin cloth) and a chaddar. In winter he prefers the thick chaddar, which is woven from endi (cotton mixed with silk).
