Bodo Tribe




Known to be the earliest settlers in Assam, and the first to cultivate rice and rear silkworms, the Bodo Tribe is the most ethnic community in the north-western parts of Assam. They are the largest minority group in Assam and speak the Bodo language. Superstitious by nature, Bodos believe in rebirth. The word 'Bodo' has been derived from the word 'Bod' which means Tibet. Mostly, Bodos of this region came here through Bhutan passes.

Baishagu is the most cherished, springtime festival celebrated at the advent of the New Year. Famous for its myriad colours and merriment, Baishagu is celebrated during mid April.

Bodo tribals are known for their folk dances such as Bardaichikhla and Bagurumba which are extremely colorful.Bodo girls dress in colorful attires and dance to the tune of traditional musical instruments.

The Bodos follow a common system of marriage in all villages. The village elders fix the bride. Bride money has to be paid and they do not marry from other communities. Sunday is considered the best day for a wedding. There is a taboo against marrying within the same clan. The groom has to stay with his father-in-law's family. The Bodos have a ritualistic naming ceremony, when a cock is offered to the Gods for the welfare of the baby.
