Yugadi

Yugadi, the Kannadiga New Year's Day, is celebrated usually during the second half of March or in early April. In Karnataka, the first day of the new year is celebrated as Yugadi. There is a custom to worship the Sun god on this day. The festival begins with a dinner constituted by a mixture of jaggery and neem leaves which represents the joys and sorrows interwoven in life. The social aspects of the celebration include oil-bath, wearing new clothes, decorating the house and giving presents to servants and dependents.
