One among the Ashtanga Yoga, Yamas are classified into five according to Yoga Sutra. Yamas have 12 classifications in Bhagavata Purana and 10 in Parashar Smriti.

The five Yamas in Yoga Sutra are Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy) and Aparigraha (non-covetousness). These five Yamas are also known as the great universal vows or the sarvabhauma maha vratas.
