Vikramshila University

Vikramshila University, a historical edifice, is located at Antichak village in Bhagalpur District of Bihar. Spread over 4 sq km, it is 44 km east of Bhagalpur.

Established by Dharampala King, it was formerly an ancient Buddhist educational institution. The excavations done here disclose that it was a part of a large monastery. Buddha images, inscribed seals and stupas are among the discoveries.

This massive structure once had all the provisions for the maintenance of residential and non-residential professors, apart from a number of pilgrims. Also included was a big Buddhist temple, which in turn was covered by numerous smaller temples.

The affairs of the University were believed to be handled by a panel of scholars appointed by the king.
