Vellappar Temple




Vellappar Temple is located at Mavoottu in Theni District. It lies on the top of Varushanad Hill.

The main idol of the temple was discovered by a local tribe called Paliyars and the temple was constructed by Kandamanur Zamindar. There is a spring near the temple and the belief is that bathing in the spring and eating food cooked out of the water will cure the incurable of diseases. The annual festival is celebrated at the Chithirai month. Adi Amavasya (Blue Moon) and Thai Amavasya are also celebrated.
