Vela Festival

Vela festival is celebrated at the Bhagavati temple in Palluruthy in Ernakulam District of Kerala.

On this occasion, huge figures representing the mythological figures from Hindu epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana, are constructed. These figures are appropriately decorated with colors and glittering objects. During night, these figures are lighted and carried on the shoulders or on wheels around the temple. The male devotees form two groups, which proceed towards the temple from opposite directions. The procession is generally noisy with drums, flutes and shouting. The two groups meet at the temple, followed by more noise and fireworks. A mock fight takes place between the two groups. This custom of fighting between the two groups is believed to be a tradition followed for many years.
